What is the difference between Gregorian calendar and liturgical calendar? ›

The liturgical calendar contains all the holy days, saints, etc. There are many branches of the Christian faith, but the Roman Catholic church and all Protestant churches use the Gregorian calendar as the base of their liturgical calendar and add the above liturgical information.

First Baptist Church's worship seeks to follow the tradition of the Christian liturgical calendar. Our church year begins with Advent followed by Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, and Ordinary Time.

The 2022 liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, November 28, 2021. During the year 2022: a. Sunday, December 12, 2021 is the Third Sunday of Advent, and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is omitted this year.

The Julian calendar is the one that was introduced in the year 46 BC by Julius Caesar to all of the Roman Empire, and it is the calendar that was used during the life of Jesus Christ and at the time of the early Church.

The Sunday cycle is divided into three years, labeled A, B, and C. 2021 was Year B, 2022 is Year C, Year A will being on November 27, 2022 and continue through December 2, 2023. In Year A, we read mostly from the Gospel of Matthew.

The liturgical calendar starts each year on the 1st Sunday of Advent. Year B began on the 1st Sunday of Advent in 2023 and now continues in 2024. Year C will commence on the 1st Sunday of Advent towards the end of 2024.

Most Presbyterian churches follow the traditional liturgical year and observe the traditional holidays, holy seasons, such as Advent, Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, etc. They also make use of the appropriate seasonal liturgical colors, etc.

General Roman Calendar and Recent Additions/Changes

After the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the General Roman Calendar was first promulgated in 1969 by Pope Saint Paul VI, and has subsequently been amended over the years by the Holy See with new celebrations.

At the time, the Julian calendar was still in use by all of the Eastern Orthodox Church and affiliated nations, while the Catholic and Protestant nations were using the Gregorian calendar.
